Sunrun Review & Feedback

Company Overview

Sunrun is one of the largest residential solar companies in the United States, with a strong national presence and a reputation as a pioneer in solar leasing. Founded in 2007, Sunrun grew rapidly by offering homeowners affordable solar solutions with little or no upfront costs. Today, the company provides solar panels, battery storage, and energy services across dozens of states.

Sunrun markets itself as more than just a solar installer—it positions itself as a full energy partner that helps households save money, achieve energy independence, and reduce reliance on traditional utility companies. Over the years, it has become a household name in solar power, especially for customers exploring lease and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) options.

Sunrun has also been at the forefront of integrating battery storage systems into its offerings, particularly with its Brightbox home battery product. This strategy aligns with the growing demand for energy resilience during power outages.

Final Thoughts

This Sunrun review shows that the company is a top-tier player in the U.S. solar industry, offering strong brand recognition, flexible financing, and broad availability.

Strengths: Sunrun stands out for its leasing and PPA options, nationwide reach, Brightbox battery storage, and turnkey services that include permitting, monitoring, and maintenance.

Weaknesses: Long-term lease costs, aggressive sales approaches, and inconsistent customer service are recurring concerns in feedback. Customers considering Sunrun should carefully review contracts and weigh lease costs against ownership.

Caution For: Those who prefer full system ownership, or who are wary of long-term contracts, may find better options with local installers or purchase financing.

I’m a very happy SunRun Solar customer, thanks to the excellent service I received. My salesperson, Jasmine Hereford, was patient, thorough, and knowledgeable. If she didn’t have an answer right away, she made sure to get it quickly. Before installation, the team came out to measure and kept me updated on each step of the process.

On installation day, the crew showed up on time, worked efficiently, and left everything clean. Since I live in an HOA community that requires roof pipes to match the house color, they painted them without hesitation. Afterward, they explained their part was finished and that we’d just need to wait for Nevada Power, which kept its schedule exactly as promised. From start to finish, the whole project took less than four weeks.

I highly recommend SunRun Solar—and especially Jasmine—for anyone considering solar.

I was very impressed with AJ Alvaro’s presentation and follow-up, as well as the updates and communication from Stevie Jones. The installation crew, led by Drake, did an excellent job—they were friendly, professional, and thorough throughout the process.

I honestly can’t think of a single positive thing to say. The system was sold by Boundless Energy, installed by Freedom Forever, and is now supposedly “maintained” by Sunrun. What I’ve actually gotten is endless calls about malfunctions, billing mistakes, and constant headaches. Every time I call Sunrun, I get a new case number—but no follow-up, no progress, and no resolution.

To make things worse, I get bounced back and forth between the three companies, each blaming the other for the problems. At this rate, I’m stuck with a system that will be nothing but trouble for the next 30 years. Save yourself the nightmare and stay away from all three of these companies.

My representative, Moses, was professional, knowledgeable, and supportive throughout the entire process. He guided me step by step, answered all of my questions, and even went out of his way to meet in person for one-on-one conversations.

I had Sunrun Solar installed at my home in Arizona, and the company they contracted to sell me the system completely misled me. I was promised they would calculate the right number of panels and that I’d never have another electric bill. That turned out to be false—between my Sunrun payment and my APS bill, I’m now paying the same or even more than before.

When I called Sunrun about it, all they said was, “sorry, they shouldn’t have told you that.” That’s not good enough. I’m seriously considering reaching out to the Arizona Attorney General for unfair consumer practices. My advice: avoid these rip-off artists.

Sunrun installed our solar panels seven years ago, and now we’re dealing with a softball-sized hole in our roof that has caused water damage and mold in our son’s bedroom. He can’t even use his room because of the ceiling damage. We’ve been asking Sunrun for help for three months, and when the issue was inspected, it turned out the hole had been stuffed with man-made material that has since failed.

Instead of taking responsibility, Sunrun is blaming a squirrel and refusing to cover the repair. They want to charge us $1,200 just to remove a panel so we can pay another $1,400 to fix the roof. To make matters worse, they turned off our panels, but we’re still being billed for them while also paying our electric company. This has driven our monthly expenses way up.

Sunrun does not stand behind their work, and their lack of care for customers has been extremely disappointing. I strongly advise others not to do business with this company.

I’ve been stuck in a nightmare with this company for 18 months. Their installation damaged my roof, and now I have severe leaks that caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage to my newly remodeled home, including ceiling damage and mold. They even set up my account under the wrong name and refuse to correct it despite being told repeatedly. To make things worse, the electrical box is literally hanging off my house, held up by a ratchet strap, and bangs against the main power line during storms—a major safety hazard.

They installed the panels over three layers of shingles, which is a fire risk, and I recently received a $6,000+ electric bill showing the system hasn’t even been producing energy for the past 18 months. Meanwhile, my roof now needs to be replaced, but they won’t remove the panels so I can get repairs done. Every call ends up in circles with managers who waste hours of my time and never fix anything.

At this point, I can’t even sleep inside my home because of the mold smell. My house and family are at risk from both water damage and fire. I’ve reached out to social media and local news stations because nothing is being resolved. This company needs to take these panels down, repair my roof, correct the billing mess, and stop destroying my home. I’m in Rhode Island, and I strongly warn anyone—stay far away from this company.

I feel that Sunrun today is much improved compared to how they were 10 years ago. The employees work well together, which really helps create a better customer experience. While there’s always room for improvement, our overall experience has been very positive. The representatives and installers were helpful and informative, making it easier for us to understand how the solar system works.

Sunrun has been a fantastic choice for solar power. From start to finish, every step of the process was handled with professionalism. My husband and I have now had Sunrun install solar on three of our homes, and with each project we’ve learned the value of being involved and communicating clearly about how we wanted the system designed and placed.

For our current home, the install was a bit more challenging since the electrical meter is on the opposite side of the house from the best solar placement. This could have meant visible conduit, but the installers took extra care to keep the system looking clean and well-integrated, which we really appreciated. The system passed city inspection at each step, and now we’re just waiting on final approval from the utility company. Once connected, we’ll finally be free from rising utility costs and those occasional power outages.

I was impressed with the dedication of the sales team and how well they kept me informed throughout the process. The installation itself went smoothly and was completed quickly, with the crew keeping us updated on their progress along the way. Unfortunately, the system didn’t pass inspection with the city, and we were told Sunrun would reach out to let us know when the issues would be fixed. It’s now been four days since we last heard from them, and there’s been no communication. We did get a notice from Pacific Gas & Electric about completing paperwork and scheduling their inspection, but we’re still waiting to hear back from Sunrun.

We recently had solar panels and a battery installed through Sunrun. While we’re generating nearly twice the power we consume, the battery’s flawed algorithm sends all the stored energy back to the grid during peak hours—forcing us to buy electricity from the grid at those same peak rates. Because of this, our monthly bills are actually higher now than before we had solar. Sunrun has completely messed this up, and the experience has been terrible.

RUN is right—the worst solar company I’ve dealt with. The sales reps are a complete waste of time. I spent almost two hours with one who ignored everything I said and kept trying to push a lease on me, even after I told him at least 20 times I wasn’t interested. Their price was higher than every other quote I received, and while they probably would’ve tried to match it, I wasn’t going to waste more of my time.

To make matters worse, they sold my information to telemarketers, and opting out is a nightmare. You have to call, answer a long questionnaire, and then fill out another one they mail to you. The panels they offer aren’t even that good—410 watts each—while I found other companies offering 460-watt panels for a much lower price. On top of that, they don’t even use microinverters on their arrays.

Our family feels like we’ve been taken advantage of by Sunrun Solar. After 10 years, the system has consistently underproduced, leaving us frustrated and disappointed. There are much better solar options out there—don’t make the same mistake we did.
